Electricity Cost Calculator
Calculate how much an appliance costs to run based on its power consumption and your electricity rate.
Appliance Information
Find this on the appliance label or manual. Typical values: LED bulb 10W, laptop 50W, refrigerator 150W, TV 100W.
Check your electricity bill for your rate. Average US residential rate: $0.16/kWh (2024).
How the Calculation Works
Step 1: Calculate Energy Consumption (kWh)
Energy (kWh) = (Power in Watts × Hours × Days) ÷ 1000
We divide by 1000 because 1 kilowatt (kW) = 1000 watts (W). Electricity bills measure consumption in kilowatt-hours (kWh).
Step 2: Calculate Total Cost
Cost = Energy (kWh) × Price per kWh
Multiply the total energy consumed by your electricity rate to get the total cost.
Example Calculation
Appliance: LED TV (100W), used 5 hours/day for 30 days, electricity rate $0.15/kWh
- Energy: (100W × 5h × 30d) ÷ 1000 = 15 kWh
- Cost: 15 kWh × $0.15 = $2.25 for the month
Common Appliance Examples
⚠️ These are typical estimates. Actual power consumption varies by model, age, and settings. Always check your appliance's label or manual for accurate values.
